An Example

A possible set-up:

  • London, Oxford, and Cambridge could be connected via optical fiber;

  • Each fiber could be equipped with eighty 2.5 Gb/s Lucent WaveStar DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexers).

  • Each central office could be equipped with eighty Cisco 12000 routers each with twelve 2.5 Gb/s ports.

Each central office could:

  • Support 200 Gb/s of local traffic. 96 Gb/s of this traffic could be voice or video. This would be equivalent to 1.5M (64 Kb/s) telephone channels or 64K (1.5 Mb/s) video channels.

  • Support 400 Gb/s of remote traffic. 160 Gb/s of this traffic could be voice or video. This would be equivalent to 2.5M (64Kb/s) telephone channels or 106K (1.5 Mb/s) video channels.

  • Survive 5 simultaneous faults while the fiber network could survive a single fault.
