Upgrade

A Banyan or Butterfly network upgrade requires a doubling in the width and the addition of a new row.  This exceeds the fault coverage of the network and thus requires an interruption in service.

A Galois network can be upgraded by columns with an occasional addition of a new row.  This can be accomplished without exceeding the fault coverage of the network and thus does not require an interruption in service.
